KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — The Johor government is gearing up to present a proposal for the construction of an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Johor Baru, revealed state executive councillor Lee Ting Han. With anticipation for increased traffic upon the commencement of the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) to Singapore in about three years, Johor seeks to address potential congestion challenges proactively.
Lee highlighted the significance of dispersing the anticipated surge in commuters efficiently, citing the capacity of the RTS Link to transport 10,000 passengers per hour per direction. To mitigate congestion, the proposal envisions the implementation of an elevated ART system, drawing inspiration from successful models worldwide and an ongoing project in Kuching, Sarawak. The state government plans to align the proposed ART routes with the existing Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) project, utilizing partially acquired land to expedite implementation.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has expressed openness to considering the proposal, emphasizing the need for an integrated public transport system to address urban congestion effectively.
