GEORGE TOWN, May 10 – The recent announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding Perak’s agreement to supply treated water to Penang marks a significant milestone in the state’s water history. The decision, hailed as one of the best water-related developments in the past 51 years for Penang, comes at a crucial juncture as the state grapples with increasing water demand and the need for a sustainable water supply solution.
The Perak-Penang Water Project promises a range of benefits for Penang, including ensuring water sufficiency beyond 2030, supporting socioeconomic progress, and stabilizing water supply for thousands of consumers. With Penang’s water consumption projected to reach 1,532 million litres per day (MLD) by 2030 and 1,844 MLD by 2040, the project offers a timely solution to the state’s growing water needs.
Additionally, the project is expected to minimize climate change risks, reduce the impact of Sungai Muda incidents, and pave the way for more reasonable future water rates. By opting for water supply from Perak, Penang aims to secure a sustainable and cost-effective solution that will benefit both present and future generations. With the support of Datuk Seri Anwar’s leadership, Penang looks forward to realizing the Perak-Penang Water Project by 2030, ensuring a reliable water supply for years to come.
