KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has clarified that the 35% salary increase for civil servants in 2007 only applied to those in the lower grade of support group 2, emphasizing the need for context when comparing salary increments over the years. Speaking to reporters after the opening of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) office, Fahmi explained that the 35% raise in 2007 was specifically for civil servants in grade 1 of support group 2, who had a monthly income of RM800 at that time.
He highlighted the difference in economic circumstances between 2007 and the present, urging for fairness in assessing the salary adjustments. Fahmi’s remarks came after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a salary hike of more than 13% for civil servants during the National Labour Day celebration. He underscored that the recent increase is among the highest in history and exceeds the adjustments made during the last review of the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA). Civil servants are set to receive the higher salaries starting from December 1.
