KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has raised urgent concerns about the inhumane conditions in the pet trade industry, particularly highlighting the hidden horrors of puppy mills and backyard breeders. These breeding facilities, often obscured from public scrutiny, mass-produce dogs under deplorable conditions, treating them as mere commodities. Puppies from these mills, frequently sold in pet stores, endure cramped, unsanitary living conditions with inadequate food, water, and veterinary care, leading to significant suffering and health issues.
CAP welcomes the Selangor government’s initiative to ban the sale of cats and dogs in pet shops, a move implemented last year aimed at curbing the cruel practices within the industry. However, CAP stresses that comprehensive legislation is essential to regulate puppy mills and backyard breeders effectively. Such regulation would ensure humane treatment and adequate veterinary care for animals, addressing the root causes of overpopulation and abuse. Until stricter laws are enacted, the pet trade’s profit-driven motives will continue to perpetuate these cruel practices, emphasizing the need for public awareness and responsible pet adoption.
