KUCHING, May 27 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has expressed serious concern over recent allegations that a politician attacked and threatened two journalists from a Tamil-language news portal. Emphasizing the importance of press freedom, Fahmi condemned any threats against journalists and stated that those threatened must be able to report such incidents without obstruction.
“I strongly disagree with and condemn any actions involving threats against journalists,” Fahmi said, pledging to meet with both the journalists involved and the accused to understand the situation fully and resolve it quickly. This statement came after his courtesy visit to Sarawak Governor Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. The National Union of Journalists Peninsular Malaysia (NUJ) has also urged Fahmi to address the issue promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of journalists. Fahmi reminded politicians to maintain civility when engaging with the media, even when disagreeing with reports, and to use their right of reply appropriately.
