KUCHING, May 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today emphasized that safeguarding the nation and protecting citizens’ rights outweigh the importance of high international rankings. Speaking at the National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2024 celebration, Anwar addressed Malaysia’s recent 34-place drop in the World Press Freedom Index 2024, stating that the government’s firm stance against racism and religious bigotry was necessary for national harmony.
Anwar acknowledged that a vibrant democracy requires a free press, but stressed the need for boundaries to prevent the spread of divisive rhetoric. He clarified that discussions on sensitive 3R (religion, race, and royalty) issues are permissible as long as they do not incite hatred or division. The prime minister urged the media to uphold ethical standards and play a pivotal role in fostering dignity and human values in the face of advancing technology and AI.
