GEORGE TOWN, May 29 — The Penang state government anticipates that it will take six months of negotiations with key stakeholders before finalizing the adoption of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672). H’ng Mooi Lye, chairman of the Local Government and Town & Country Planning Committee, announced that talks are ongoing with the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN) and the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp).
H’ng noted that the state government initiated the process on March 20, 2024, and is currently compiling data on solid waste management and public cleansing services from the past three years. He explained that the negotiation process would include engagement sessions with the Public Service Department to detail options for local authorities’ staff. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming previously indicated that Penang is expected to be the next state to adopt the Act, aiming to standardize and enhance the efficiency of waste management across Malaysia.
