GEORGE TOWN, May 31 – The Penang government has prepared sites for building reservoirs and laying pipes to receive treated water from Perak through the Perak-Penang Water Project, according to Zairil Khir Johari, chairman of the State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PWSC) is finalizing land reclamation for the identified areas.

Despite readiness on Penang’s part, the project’s detailed timeline remains uncertain as the Perak state government seeks federal funding to commence the first phase. The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 5, will initially supply water to Seberang Perai, covering Nibong Tebal and Sungai Bakap. Concerns about water pollution in Sungai Perak affecting the project’s feasibility have been allayed by a final report from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, confirming adequate water capacity and quality to meet regional needs until 2050.
