KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 – The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has announced the upcoming road tax structure for electric vehicles (EVs), set to take effect from January 1, 2026. Following the expiration of the exemption on EV road tax on December 31, 2025, the new pricing system will be based on the power output of the EV, with rates varying across 11 main groups. Under the new structure, EV road tax pricing will generally range from RM20 to RM20,000, depending on the power output and corresponding group classification.
For example, an EV with a power output of 150kW, falling under Group B, will incur a total road tax price of RM160 – significantly lower than the original structure. This reduction marks a significant shift in EV road tax expenses, providing relief to owners compared to the previous pricing scheme. Owners can refer to their Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC) or the digital road tax in the MyJPJ app to determine the power output of their EV and corresponding road tax rates.
