KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — In a recent meeting with Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, ByteDance expressed its proposal to invest RM10 billion in Malaysia, aiming to transform the country into a regional artificial intelligence (AI) hub. This announcement was made following discussions with TikTok Vice President Helena Lersch.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is already developing a data center at Sedenak Tech Park, Kulai, Johor, and plans to expand its facilities with an additional RM1.5 billion investment to meet future demands. While investments from tech giants like Microsoft and NVIDIA have highlighted Malaysia’s neutral stance as a draw for both Eastern and Western investors, concerns regarding the impact of AI on employment and the environment remain.

The government has initiated proactive measures, such as the “AI for the People” training program, to prepare the workforce for AI-driven changes. However, the environmental implications, particularly energy and water usage by data centers, warrant urgent attention to ensure sustainable development.
