SERDANG, June 11 – The proposal to increase the ceiling price of local white rice (BPT) is anticipated to be finalised before October this year, announced Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. Speaking at the launch of MAHA 2024, Mohamad Sabu indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), along with several other ministries, is currently discussing the price adjustment.
The proposed price increase aims to ensure the sustainability of the food production chain, particularly benefiting paddy farmers. The current ceiling price of RM2.60 per kilogramme has been deemed insufficient, with recommendations to raise it to RM3.20 per kilogramme. This move is crucial to prevent the dumping of local rice and to encourage manufacturers to continue purchasing at viable prices. Additionally, Mohamad Sabu assured that the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) is closely monitoring international bird flu cases to safeguard local food supplies.
