SUNGAI BAKAP, June 22 — The Sungai Bakap state by-election will see a direct contest between Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abidin Ismail. This announcement came from Election Commission (EC) returning officer Khairulnizam Hashim after the nominations at Dewan Serbaguna Jawi, Taman Desa Jawi in Penang closed at 10am today.

Joohari, dressed in PKR’s signature sky blue baju Melayu, arrived at the nomination centre at 8.47am, supported by key party figures including Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Lim Guan Eng. Abidin, wearing a darker blue to reflect his coalition’s color, arrived shortly after with about 1,000 supporters, including PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang. Polling day is set for July 6, with early voting on July 2, following the death of incumbent assemblyman Nor Zamri Mohd Nor.
