KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has announced that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will commence the tender process for Malaysia’s second 5G network on July 1st. The move comes after issuing a Ministerial Direction (No. 1 of 2024) to identify and appoint a telco to build the new network using the 700MHz and 3.5GHz frequency bands.

Fahmi emphasized that the appointment process will be conducted transparently under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. This initiative follows the successful meeting of conditions precedent under the Share Subscription Agreement (SSA) by CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, and YTL Communications, paving the way for Malaysia’s transition to a Dual 5G network model. The new network aims to enhance 5G coverage, promote competition, and ensure affordable and quality services for the public.
