KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 – Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun has been appointed as the new chairman of the Election Commission (EC), effective today. The appointment was announced by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, who confirmed that it received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, in accordance with Article 114(1) of the Federal Constitution.

This appointment follows the retirement of Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, who stepped down on May 9 after serving as EC chairman since August 2020. Abdul Ghani’s tenure spanned nearly four years, during which he oversaw significant electoral processes and reforms. Ramlan Harun’s appointment marks a new chapter for the EC, with expectations high for his leadership in ensuring fair and transparent electoral practices in Malaysia.
