KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 – PETRONAS has introduced ProTough+™, its third graphene-based solution, designed to enhance the strength and mechanical properties of composite materials. Launched under its Advanced Materials portfolio, ProTough+™ aims to support the manufacturing of lighter and more economical products, crucial for lower carbon solutions such as hydrogen mobility. Tests on carbon fibre reinforced polymers with ProTough+™ show a more than 35% increase in tensile strength, demonstrating its potential in achieving component lightweighting.

In conjunction with the launch at the Advanced Materials Show in Birmingham, UK, PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB) signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with HyPerComp Engineering Inc. This collaboration focuses on incorporating ProTough+™ into the manufacturing of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs). Initial tests indicate ProTough+™ can enhance the composite material’s fibre strength to 97%, increasing the burst pressure of high-pressured vessels by up to 5%. Dr Mahpuzah Abai, CEO of PTVSB, expressed confidence in the strategic partnership’s potential to offer competitive and sustainable business solutions.
