GEORGE TOWN, July 1 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of integrating environmental and cultural considerations in the development of the new Penang Hill cable car project. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Anwar highlighted that while modern technology and impressive infrastructure are essential, maintaining the unique cultural and environmental features of Bukit Bendera is crucial.

The project aims to blend advanced technology with Penang’s cultural heritage, ensuring a minimal environmental impact by involving minimal tree-cutting and adhering to all necessary legal approvals. The RM250 million project, set to be completed by the third quarter of 2026, is a public-private partnership between the Penang government and Hartasuma Sdn Bhd. The cable car system, featuring 50 eight-seater gondolas, will provide an eco-friendly transportation option, enhancing connectivity to Bukit Bendera and supporting the area’s tourism infrastructure.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow noted that the project is expected to improve access and transform Penang Hill into a must-visit destination, aligning with the state’s tourism strategies. The cable car will also serve as a gateway to the UNESCO-recognized Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, further promoting sustainable tourism.
