SEPANG, July 1 — The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum (CMCF) announced it is prepared to regulate social media content following the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) plan to implement a licensing regime for social media platforms. CMCF’s chief executive, Mediha Mahmood, emphasized the organization’s readiness, citing their existing Content Code and status as an independent self-regulatory body registered under the Communications and Multimedia Act.

The CMCF has highlighted its capacity to oversee content moderation and enforce sanctions for breaches of the content code, which includes guidelines formulated with input from industry players, civil society organizations, and the public. Mediha assured that CMCF’s framework aligns with international standards while adapting to local cultural sensitivities. She also noted that the forum is willing to expand its role if provided with additional resources to manage the large volume of social media content, ensuring sustainable and effective regulation.
