NIBONG TEBAL, July 1 — With six days remaining before the Sungai Bakap state by-election on July 6, the unity government’s machinery is intensifying efforts to achieve a voter turnout of at least 65 per cent. PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli expressed optimism for a higher turnout compared to previous by-elections, including the Kuala Kubu Baru by-election in Selangor on May 11, which recorded nearly 63 per cent.

Rafizi noted that the target of 65 per cent is significant, especially considering the expanded voter base due to automatic registration for Malaysians aged 18 and above. He emphasized that voter turnout plays a crucial role in securing victory in by-elections, including Sungai Bakap, which has 39,279 eligible voters. Rafizi, also the Minister of Economy, addressed various concerns from Indian voters during a program, reiterating the government’s commitment to the welfare of all communities, particularly the low-income and B40 groups.
