KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today addressed the government’s decision to open matriculation spots to all top Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) scorers, regardless of race, aiming to alleviate tensions within the education system. Speaking at the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister’s Department, Anwar emphasized the need for a balanced approach amidst debates surrounding the Bumiputera quota for matriculation college admissions.

Anwar clarified that while the existing Bumiputera quota remains unchanged, ensuring compliance with Article 153 of the Federal Constitution, the new policy guarantees admission to all students scoring 10As and above in SPM starting from the 2025 intake. This decision, he asserted, aims to promote fairness in education while acknowledging the complexities of Malaysia’s diverse socio-economic landscape.

The move comes as a response to annual controversies and criticisms over matriculation placements, which in recent years have sparked racial and social tensions. Anwar’s statement underscores the government’s commitment to balancing meritocracy with principles of justice and fairness, ensuring equitable opportunities for all Malaysian students.
