KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 – Selangor emerged as the leading contributor to Malaysia’s economic growth in 2023, accounting for 25.9 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to the Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM). Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted that Selangor’s impressive performance was followed by the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (15.9 per cent), Johor (9.5 per cent), Sarawak (9.1 per cent), Penang (7.4 per cent), and Sabah (5.3 per cent), with these six states collectively contributing 73 per cent to the national economy.
Mohd Uzir also noted that the Malaysian economy experienced a moderate growth of 3.6 per cent in 2023, with all states recording positive growth. Selangor led the charge with a 5.4 per cent increase, followed by Pahang at 5.2 per cent, Johor at 4.1 per cent, and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur at 3.7 per cent.
