KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The Malaysian government is considering a proposal to exempt electric vehicles (EVs) from local authority parking fees in urban areas, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. This initiative aims to encourage the adoption of EVs among motorists and promote green transportation.

Nga revealed that discussions are ongoing with local councils to assess the feasibility of this proposal, drawing inspiration from London’s model where EVs benefit from parking exemptions while non-EVs face congestion charges. This comes as Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced significant reductions in road tax for EVs and the introduction of special “green plates” to support Malaysia’s EV initiatives. Currently, about 3,000 out of the targeted 10,000 EV charging stations are operational nationwide.
