KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The government is currently reviewing specific acts to implement harsher penalties for the theft of communication cables, which have been causing significant service disruptions. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the process involves gathering feedback and considering various aspects within the jurisdiction of the Penal Code before enforcement. Efforts are also being coordinated based on different states’ experiences to develop a comprehensive solution.

The proposed amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, being detailed by the Attorney General’s Chambers, aim to curb the increasingly rampant cable theft activities. Fahmi expressed hope that the implementation matters can be approved at the Cabinet level and brought to the ongoing Parliament session. He shared these updates after attending the premiere of the “Hadji Murat” theatre production with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, encouraging young people to cultivate an interest in literary and theatrical works.
