SEATTLE, KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — Acting on alerts from the Seattle-based Basel Action Network (BAN), the Malaysian government announced the detention of 301 out of 453 intermodal containers identified by BAN, with 106 of these containing illegal electronic waste. Environment Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad praised BAN’s collaboration in a press conference in Klang and noted that another 200 containers remain to be inspected. This seizure underscores the ongoing issue of e-waste trafficking, which BAN has been combating since 2002 through initiatives within the United Nations Basel Convention.

Jim Puckett, BAN Executive Director, expressed the organization’s commitment to aiding Malaysia in detaining these shipments and prosecuting involved parties. Despite the US not ratifying the Basel Convention, BAN has worked with the US Department of Justice to hold recyclers accountable and promotes the use of e-Stewards certified recyclers to ensure ethical e-waste processing. Mageswari Sangaralingam of Sahabat Alam Malaysia emphasized the need for vigilance against corruption and holding traffickers accountable, as Malaysia becomes a dumping ground for waste from wealthy countries. This action highlights the critical need for global cooperation and stringent enforcement to tackle the hazardous waste crisis.
