KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — A new bill aimed at protecting the welfare of gig workers is expected to be tabled for its first reading during the Third Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament in October, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today. This decision was made during a meeting of the Supreme Committee on the Establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission, which Ahmad Zahid chaired.

Ahmad Zahid highlighted the urgent need for this legislation, noting that only 250,000 out of 1.16 million gig workers contribute to the Social Security Organisation (Socso). The new Act, to be presented by the Human Resources Ministry, aims to address this gap and will be supported by the formation of the Gig Economy Commission under the Prime Minister’s Department within the next two months. This initiative will cover a broad range of gig workers, including e-hailing, p-hailing, part-time, and semi-professional workers.
