SUNGAI BAKAP, July 6 — PAS has successfully retained the Sungai Bakap seat with a larger majority than the state elections last year. According to unofficial results as of 8.11pm, Abidin Ismail, representing the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, secured 14,554 votes, leading by 4,269 votes over Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Joohari Ariffin, who garnered 10,285 votes.
The by-election saw an estimated voter turnout of 63.24 per cent from the 39,279 registered voters. This by-election was called following the death of the previous incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff of PAS, due to abdominal inflammation on May 24. In the last state elections, Nor Zamri won the seat with a 1,563-vote majority against PH’s Nurhidayah Che Rus.
