CYBERJAYA, July 15 — The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) is urging for collective action to foster responsibility and respect in online interactions to combat the rising incidents of online harassment and abuse. Highlighting recent tragic incidents and alarming statistics from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which reported 51,638 cases of harmful content circulating on social media in just the first three months of this year, the Content Forum underscores the severe mental health issues, social isolation, and loss of life that can result from cyberbullying.
The Content Forum advocates for a multifaceted approach to address the issue, including responsible reporting, promoting digital literacy, and enhancing content moderation on social media platforms. By fostering a digital culture of empathy and respect, encouraging self-regulation, and supporting the government’s efforts to combat cyberbullying, the Content Forum aims to create a safer and more supportive digital environment. This requires active participation from youth organizations, mental health experts, civil society groups, educators, parents, law enforcement agencies, and technology companies to develop comprehensive strategies that address the root causes of cyberbullying and support victims.
