PUTRAJAYA, July 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Conference of Rulers has called for careful drafting of amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Bill 355). Speaking at the Convention to Dignify Malaysia’s Syariah Law and Judiciary, Anwar emphasized the need for thorough examination to prevent the perception of haste or weaknesses in its implementation.
The Conference of Rulers, after initial briefings, has consented to the amendments but requested detailed scrutiny. Anwar stated that the government will present the negotiation results on Bill 355 to the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) next month. The amendments aim to expand the jurisdiction of the Shariah Court beyond the current limits of fines, imprisonment, and lashes, ensuring a comprehensive and internationally acceptable legal framework.
