GEORGE TOWN, July 16 — George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) has reiterated its dedication to promoting cultural harmony and inclusivity following criticism over a promotional video for the George Town Festival 2024. The video was accused of neglecting Malay cultural representation. GTWHI emphasized its commitment to showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of Penang and highlighted its long-standing practice of celebrating local traditions through the annual George Town Heritage Celebrations.

This year’s Heritage Celebrations, held on July 7, featured over 22 local community groups and attracted 18,000 visitors. Themed “Transmission and Protection,” the event included workshops and performances on traditional arts like Batik, Wayang Kulit, and Gamelan. GTWHI also clarified that 53 out of 80 programs at the upcoming George Town Festival will feature local Malaysian artists. GTWHI has advised festival contractor Kerson Media Global Sdn Bhd to address the concerns promptly and enhance the promotion of local programs.
