GEORGE TOWN, July 20 – The 15th George Town Festival (GTF) commenced with a dynamic and eclectic celebration of art, featuring both local and international talents. Esteemed guests, festival sponsors, supporters, partners, and artists gathered to witness the vibrant opening ceremony. Powered by the theme “Here & Now,” the 10-day festival, running from 19th to 28th July, showcases over 80 programs featuring artists from around the globe, including Indonesia, Thailand, Italy, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Japan, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Colombia, Singapore, the United States, Vietnam, China, and India.

The opening ceremony, officiated by Penang’s Chief Minister, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, and Penang State EXCO for Tourism and the Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, featured a captivating performance by Omara Boria, celebrating the rich history of George Town. Highlighting the festival’s focus on community engagement and artistic interaction, Australian artist Gav Barbey’s “Shadow Sculptures” and Japanese artist Kaito Sakuma’s “Preserving Memories (Liquid Mirror)” invited guests to participate in the art-making process.

Supported by the Australian High Commission of Malaysia and Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur, respectively, these installations emphasized the immersive and inclusive nature of art, encouraging viewers to engage deeply with the works. The opening ceremony culminated in a bus tour to GTF@Capri Penang, where guests explored the festival’s highlight exhibits, transforming the historical row of buildings on Jalan Magazine into temporary art galleries.

With an array of visual arts, performing arts, family fun, forums, and community engagement events, George Town Festival 2024 promises a rich and diverse cultural experience. For more information, visit www.georgetownfestival.com or follow George Town Festival on social media.
