KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — A global IT disruption is wreaking havoc on transport services and other sectors in Malaysia. Airlines and rail services are particularly affected by the Microsoft and CrowdStrike system outages, causing significant inconvenience for travelers and service users. Among the affected are AirAsia, which is experiencing delays in its reservation and check-in systems, and Firefly Airlines, where customers are unable to book flights or manage bookings online.
Rail service providers KTMB and KLIA Ekspres have also been hit, with ticketing systems down and customers forced to purchase tickets manually at counters. Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd’s mySESB applications and web portal, and Pos Malaysia’s services are experiencing technical difficulties due to the outage. The disruption has notably impacted operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), particularly at Terminal 2, where long queues have formed as check-in kiosks are out of service. In contrast, operations at Terminal 1 remain unaffected.
The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) is actively monitoring the situation and working with stakeholders to restore normalcy. NACSA clarified that while the outage is not a cyber attack, it poses significant cybersecurity challenges, affecting sectors such as airports and banks. The agency is urging affected parties to stay alert for updates and manage temporary solutions to mitigate risks.
