KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has dismissed concerns over Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd’s (MRT Corp) sustainability following increased infrastructure costs reported in the Auditor-General’s Report. He clarified that MRT Corp, being a government-linked company (GLC), has its construction costs guaranteed by the government, ensuring continuous repayment through the Finance Ministry.
Loke emphasized that the infrastructure construction, aimed at fostering economic growth and urban connectivity, is a long-term investment that will gradually generate earnings. He assured that despite the low fare rates, the government’s focus remains on completing the metro rail network in the Klang Valley with the MRT3 project, while also improving first and last mile connectivity. Additionally, Loke stated there are no current plans to raise public transport fares, which have remained unchanged for the past decade.
