KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has clarified that fundraisers for Chinese schools, including those supported by breweries, are typically held off-campus and are attended solely by parents and supporters, not students. Loke emphasized that these events are conducted in restaurants or other external venues, adhering to guidelines from the Education Ministry.
Addressing concerns about indirect exposure of students to alcohol, Loke stated, “Most fundraisers do not involve students because they are attended by their parents or the public who come to support the school.” His remarks come amid controversy surrounding a recent charity event sponsored by Tiger Beer, which sparked criticism from Islamist party PAS for allegedly normalizing alcohol consumption. Loke is set to consult the Cabinet on potentially revising the Education Ministry’s guidelines on accepting funds from alcohol and tobacco companies.
