KUALA LUMPUR, August 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed concerns over new social media regulations, emphasizing that they are designed to combat online crime and harmful content without restricting freedom of speech. Speaking at the National Safety Month 2024 event, Anwar highlighted the need for stricter regulations to address issues like cybercrime, fraud, and harmful online behavior that have caused significant harm, including suicides and financial losses.
The new regulatory framework, effective August 1, 2024, requires social media and messaging services with over eight million users in Malaysia to obtain a Class Application Service Licence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Anwar stressed that these measures are essential for public safety and maintaining a secure digital environment. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said also announced upcoming legislation to further enhance digital safety, including provisions for a ‘kill switch’ to address online crimes and harassment.
