KUALA LUMPUR, August 3 — DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng has called out political leaders and critics for their “preaching” about funding vernacular schools through brewery sponsorships, urging instead for full government support. Lim specifically addressed former education minister Mazlee Malik, Umno Youth chief Muhammad Akmal Salleh, and Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, accusing them of patronizing non-Muslim parents about funding practices that have been ongoing for over 30 years.
Lim criticized the moral objections to brewery-sponsored fundraising, stating that vernacular schools are forced to seek such support due to inadequate government funding. He emphasized that the real issue is the chronic underfunding of these schools, which has led to their reliance on donations from companies like Tiger and Carlsberg. Lim urged the government to provide sufficient funding to eliminate the need for such sponsorships and to address the funding gap highlighted by the discrepancy between allocated and received amounts in the 2022 Budget.
