KUALA LUMPUR, August 6 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that the Malaysian government is exploring the possibility of developing a national social media application to better protect users online. This consideration arises from concerns that international platforms, which generate substantial revenue from Malaysian users, are not adequately addressing safety issues.
Fahmi highlighted that platforms like Facebook earned approximately US$600 million (RM2.66 billion) from Malaysia last year but fall short in ensuring user safety. He noted that while creating a new social media platform is complex, some countries have pursued similar initiatives. Additionally, Fahmi will meet with Meta Platforms Inc. to address the removal of Palestine-related content and ensure that such actions do not affect content related to recent rallies.
