GEORGE TOWN, August 12 – Water levels in Penang’s two major dams have hit alarming lows, with storage capacities at critical levels. The Itam Dam’s effective capacity has fallen to 30.0%, down from 31.2% on Thursday, while the Teluk Bahang Dam has decreased to 26.6% from 27.4%. Despite recent rainfall, these levels remain insufficient to alleviate the water shortage.
The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) previously reported that several dams, including Teluk Bahang, are at dangerous levels, with others also approaching critical thresholds. In response, Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has urged residents to cut water usage by 10% to conserve resources, and has activated a crisis management plan to ensure water availability until the rainy season in September.
