GEORGE TOWN, August 13 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has called on the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to implement a ban on heavy vehicles during peak traffic hours to mitigate congestion on Penang’s roads. According to a recent CAP survey, the presence of goods and construction vehicles during the morning and evening rush hours significantly contributes to traffic jams, particularly on Jalan Masjid Negeri and Jalan Scotland, which are heavily trafficked and disrupted further by nearby schools.
The proposal suggests prohibiting heavy vehicles from entering major roads leading into the city center between 6:30 am to 9:30 am and 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm daily. This approach mirrors a similar initiative in Kuala Lumpur, where the Road Transport Department has successfully banned heavy vehicles with a laden weight exceeding 7,500 kg during peak hours to enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion.
