GEORGE TOWN, August 21 — Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) has initiated preliminary feasibility studies for the establishment of a solar photovoltaic offshore floating farm system at Penang’s harbour. This innovative project aims to provide renewable energy (RE) to cruise ships docking at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry.
According to PPSB CEO Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan, the floating solar farm, spanning 4 hectares, could generate up to 30 megawatts of electricity, potentially powering the terminal and cruise ships while also supporting the North Butterworth Container Terminal. This initiative is in response to the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) strategy to cut carbon emissions by at least 40% by 2030, positioning Penang Port as a leader in sustainable port operations.
