GEORGE TOWN, August 22 – The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has confirmed that the Penang Botanic Gardens will remain accessible to the public throughout the construction of the Penang Hill Cable Car project, which is expected to be completed by June 2026. However, certain areas, including the current hawker centre and nearby parking lots, will be temporarily closed during the construction phase. Visitors are advised to park at alternative locations such as the Youth Park or Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple car parks, both within walking distance of the gardens.
To accommodate the ongoing construction, the hawker centre will be relocated to a temporary site near the Penang Botanic Gardens’ office by the end of September 2024. The site of the existing hawker centre will eventually be developed into a multi-storey parking and commercial complex, providing modern facilities for visitors, hikers, and the local community. PHC, in collaboration with Hartasuma Sdn. Bhd., the cable car project concessionaire, assures that all necessary safety standards will be maintained during this period.
PHC has requested public cooperation in adhering to safety messages and signage around the construction site. The Penang Hill Cable Car project is expected to enhance the status of Penang Hill and the Penang Botanic Gardens, alleviating parking issues and improving public facilities, ultimately benefiting both tourism and the local economy.
