GEORGE TOWN, August 22 — Rapid Penang is set to enhance its Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) services with the addition of 300 new vans, a move aimed at improving first-last mile connectivity for Penang residents. The new fleet, delivered by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, will begin with 30 vans in December 2024, with the remaining vehicles arriving in phases until June 2025.
Some of the new vans will be equipped to accommodate disabled passengers (OKU), underscoring Rapid Penang’s commitment to providing accessible and inclusive public transportation. Since the launch of the DRT service on August 1, 2024, in Farlim and Air Itam, Rapid Penang has operated with two vans, offering RM1 fares and free rides for those using the Mutiara My50 Pass and OKU Smile Pass.
The introduction of the additional vans is expected to improve service coverage, particularly in areas not served by regular bus routes, thereby strengthening the public transport network in Penang. Rapid Bus CEO Yazurin Salij Yasin highlighted the positive response to the Air Itam pilot project, where the DRT service has already attracted around 120 daily users.
The expansion will further support the existing Rapid Penang bus routes, targeting underserved regions and enhancing the overall public transport experience in the state.
