KUALA LUMPUR, August 31 – Malaysia celebrated its 67th National Day at Dataran Putrajaya, with this year’s theme, “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka,” reflecting the nation’s dedication to unity, patriotism, and the enduring spirit of independence. The grand event, attended by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, and Raja Permaisuri Agong, Raja Zarith Sofiah, not only honored the nation’s progress but also remembered the historic day when the Federation of Malaya gained independence from the British Empire on 31 August 1957.
The journey to independence was led by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who, along with other leaders, successfully negotiated with the British government for Malaya’s freedom. On the morning of 31 August 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman declared Malaya’s independence at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, before a crowd of over 20,000 people. The declaration marked the birth of a new nation, with the raising of the Malayan flag and the resonating chants of “Merdeka!” signifying the end of British colonial rule and the beginning of self-governance.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his National Day 2024 address, urged Malaysians to reflect on the nation’s history and the unity that made independence possible. He emphasized the importance of maintaining this unity as the foundation for Malaysia’s continued success. “Our independence was achieved through the strength and solidarity of our people, and it is this same spirit that will guide us toward a brighter future,” Anwar stated.
The celebration showcased a colorful parade with 17,262 participants, including 67 contingents, 36 bands, and 534 military assets, underscoring Malaysia’s military prowess and cultural richness. A highlight of the event was a fly-past by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, featuring helicopters carrying the national flag and those of the armed forces, symbolizing the nation’s pride and sovereignty. As the nation commemorated its independence, the 2024 National Day celebration served as a powerful reminder of Malaysia’s journey since 1957.
It highlighted the ongoing importance of unity, progress, and shared values in shaping a prosperous and inclusive future for all Malaysians.
