KUALA LUMPUR, September 2 – The River of Life (RoL) project, initiated in 2011, is a bold urban renewal effort aimed at revitalizing the Klang River and Gombak River, which were once vital to Kuala Lumpur’s early growth. Located near Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, this initiative seeks to modernize the city’s waterway while preserving its rich history, transforming the 110km-long river basin into an economic and ecological hub.
As Malaysia’s capital continues to evolve, the RoL project highlights the delicate balance between modernisation and conservation. With the aim of enhancing KL’s water ecology, tourism, and economic vitality, the project faces the challenge of integrating the city’s past with its future. Dr. Keith Tan Kay Hin, an Associate Professor at Taylor’s University, emphasizes the need for thoughtful conservation alongside urban renewal to ensure KL’s story is one of pride and unity for all Malaysians.
