PERAI, September 8 – Penang’s water treatment capacity has been significantly enhanced with the addition of Package 12A at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP), increasing its output by 114 million litres per day (MLD). This expansion will serve the 465,000 consumers dependent on the plant, including areas in Seberang Perai and parts of Penang Island. Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow is set to officially open the new module on 14 September 2024.
The Sungai Dua WTP is Penang’s largest water treatment facility, and the new Package 12A module was rapidly constructed to meet the increased water demand following the pandemic. The plant’s maximum design capacity has now risen from 1,228 MLD to 1,342 MLD, ensuring more stable water supply across the state, especially in high-demand areas.
Additionally, the Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipeline Project, aimed at delivering more treated water to Penang Island, has begun. The 1.35m pipeline, scheduled for completion in January 2026, will address water shortages and support the growing needs of 120,000 consumers on the island, including factories in the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone.
