KUALA LUMPUR, September 10 — Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to undertake more extensive consultations with stakeholders before proceeding with its Domain Name System (DNS) redirection order. This directive follows significant public backlash and concerns about the potential impact on privacy and freedom of information.

Teo stressed that while MCMC’s intent to combat illegal online activities is valid, better engagement with the community could have fostered greater understanding and support for the policy. The order, which required internet service providers (ISPs) to implement DNS redirection by September 30, has been suspended as MCMC conducts further discussions. The suspension aims to ensure that the policy’s consequences are thoroughly understood and that alternative solutions are considered.
