PUTRAJAYA, September 12 — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will stand trial for four charges of power abuse involving RM232.5 million in bribes, after the Court of Appeal today rejected his bid to restore his acquittal. The court’s five-judge panel, chaired by Datuk Azizah Nawawi, ruled that the Court of Appeal has the jurisdiction to hear the prosecution’s appeal against the High Court’s acquittal of Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin, 61, is accused of using his position to secure bribes for his party, Bersatu, from three companies and an individual between 2020 and 2021. Despite his legal team’s argument that the Court of Appeal lacked the authority to overturn the acquittal, the judges ruled otherwise, maintaining the validity of the charges and setting the stage for a trial in the Sessions Court. The case is set for mention on September 27.
