GEORGE TOWN, September 13 — Penang’s Municipal Council (MBPP) has launched the use of body cameras for its enforcement officers to enhance transparency, accountability, and safety. This new initiative aims to build public trust and uphold professionalism by providing verifiable evidence of enforcement actions, thus reducing misunderstandings and protecting both officers and the public from potential conflicts.
The first phase of the project, implemented in October 2023, involved the purchase of 15 body cameras for Traffic Wardens, followed by an additional 50 units for the Clamping and Towing unit and special force team in May 2024. MBPP plans to expand this initiative in phases, with 50 more units to be added in 2025, ultimately equipping all enforcement officers with body cameras. This step is part of MBPP’s commitment to improving enforcement operations and ensuring fair and transparent practices.
