KUALA LUMPUR, September 15 — PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan has urged non-Muslim-owned eateries without halal certification to refrain from serving Muslim patrons or presenting themselves as Muslim-friendly. His statement comes amid ongoing discussions over whether halal certification should be mandatory for food establishments that do not serve pork or alcohol.
Takiyuddin highlighted that the proposal by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is focused on safeguarding Muslim consumers’ rights to halal food, and non-certified eateries should not create the impression that their food is appropriate for Muslims. His remarks follow concerns raised by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, who argued that mandatory halal certification could place unnecessary burdens on businesses.
