KUALA LUMPUR, September 19 – GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceutical Sdn Bhd (GSK) has announced the launch of Shingrix (Recombinant Zoster Vaccine, Adjuvanted) in Malaysia, aimed at preventing shingles (herpes zoster) and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) in adults aged 50 and over, as well as those aged 18 and over at increased risk.
This non-live, recombinant subunit adjuvanted vaccine, administered in two doses, is now available for those who are at heightened risk of the condition due to age or immunocompromised status. Shingrix has demonstrated high efficacy, with clinical studies showing up to 97% effectiveness in adults 50 and older, and over 80% in follow-up periods of six to ten years.
Dr. Alap Gandhi, Country Medical Director of GSK Malaysia, highlighted the vaccine’s potential to significantly reduce the burden of shingles, a disease known for its severe pain and long-lasting nerve discomfort. This launch marks a significant step in enhancing public health and providing a crucial tool in the fight against shingles in Malaysia.
