GEORGE TOWN, September 23 — Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong has been appointed as the new chairman of Penang DAP, replacing Chow Kon Yeow, who held the position for 25 years. Sim, who is also the human resources minister, emphasized unity within the party as he announced the new state committee for the 2024-2027 term, which includes Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh as the deputy chairman.
Sim acknowledged Chow’s contributions to Penang DAP and called on members to unite under the new leadership to strengthen the party. He also stressed the importance of focusing on grassroots work and supporting both the state government led by Chow and the federal government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. A special task force led by Ramkarpal, Zairil Khir Johari, and Yeoh Soon Hin will be established to improve ties with civil society.
The new state committee also includes Lim Hui Ying as the secretary, Zairil Khir Johari and Yeoh Soon Hin as vice-chairmen, and Daniel Gooi as the political education director. Sim dismissed speculation about his aspirations to be the next Penang chief minister, stating that his immediate priority is to engage with the people and prepare for the next general election.
Sim expressed gratitude to the party delegates for their trust and vowed to strengthen the party’s presence in Penang, particularly among younger voters. He promised that the new team would “hit the ground running” and focus on building a stronger party for the future.
