GEORGE TOWN, September 24 — Heavy September rainfall has helped increase water levels at Penang’s Air Itam and Teluk Bahang dams, but reserves are still not at safe levels, according to Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K., CEO of PBA Holdings Bhd (PBAHB) and Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP). The Air Itam Dam is at 58.3% capacity, while the Teluk Bahang Dam stands at 31.3%, both needing higher reserves before the next dry season.
The Expanded Mengkuang Dam on the mainland, however, has reached 90.3% capacity and serves as a contingency water source. Pathmanathan emphasized the need for Penang residents to continue using water wisely, despite recent rainfall, to ensure the dams reach optimal levels by December 2024, in preparation for the dry season projected to begin in January 2025.
